San Francisco legacy business West Coast Leather partnered for their 20th Business Anniversary with artist fashion designer Cassidy Hoban and recently did a photoshoot with new items from his line. His emerging brand is called "Love Over Hate."
The West Coast Leather photoshoot features the Library Collection and the newest designs at the San Francisco West Coast Leather store. We shot with famed photographer Ed Jay and fashion model Torunn Sivesund. The shoot was styled by Founder and Owner of West Coast Leather Skip Pas.
Love Over Hate is a brand founded by artist/DJ Cassidy Hoban in Los Angeles in 2013. Cassidy is the son of Michael Hoban, founder of North Beach Leather and designer of the infamous 8 ball jacket (mentioned by Jay-Z, Seinfeld and A Tribe Called Quest). Cassidy first got into design when he assisted his father in designing a black and red leather baseball jersey for Martin Lawrence. In the early 2000s he launched a graffiti-based street wear brand called Westyle 21310 with legendary DJ and graffiti artist Rob One (CBS crew). Since then, he has designed for Union LA and Real Bad Man and has sold out designs in Supreme LA. Random fact: Cassidy DJ’d the famous Rap Olympics, the battle that Eminem talks about in his hit song “Airplane.”
His artwork has been shown along with the biggest names in street art including Banksy, Keith Harring and Kaws at West Chelsea Contemporary Gallery’s “Icons & Vandals” and “Concrete to Canvas” shows. Love Over Hate was launched in 2013. The words “love over hate” are symbolized by a dripping pink heart spray-painted over a thick white X representing hate, rejection, intolerance and rules in the signature logo. It started with stickers, tags and signatures on the back of his paintings. Then came the hats. His first hat was sold to celebrity DJ Buckrodgers who was photographed wearing it onstage with Dave Chappelle later that week. His designs are also in a Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.
The DJ, graffiti, fashion and skate community have supported the brand as well as all counter cultures. The increasingly recognizable logo has been seen on actor/rapper Gata from Davefx, celebrity chef Burt Backman, Jamie Kennedy and many more. The message isn’t a claim that our hearts are full of love and have no hate. It’s a reminder that we have a choice… which one feels better?
